Gender-focused digital campaign: A case study of the 2022 regional elections in Andalusia using Facebook

Authors

Abstract

This study analyses the digital election campaign for the 2022 Andalusian parliamentary elections from a gender perspective. Based on a quantitative content analysis of the entirety of the Facebook posts published by political parties and candidates, this article examines the significance and framing of gender issues in electoral communication. The main findings showed that left-wing parties and female candidates paid more attention to gender- related issues, although significant differences can be observed between parties and between male and female candidates. Furthermore, most of the gender references were often associated with negative campaign content, suggesting that gender continues to be a polarising issue in contemporary political discourse. In short, the findings show that gender is a relevant dimension of political manifestos, as well as an important factor in candidate positioning within digital election campaigns.
